Pricing From the Retailer's Side of the Channel

A retail price calculator answers a different question than a wholesale one: given what you already paid for inventory, what should you charge the person actually buying it off your shelf or website? The two common ways retailers get there — a target margin percentage, or a flat multiplier — produce the same number, just framed differently.

By Target Margin

Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin %)

By Keystone Multiplier

Price = Cost × Multiplier

Keystone Pricing by Retail Category

Doubling wholesale cost — keystone pricing — has been a retail default for decades because it's simple and tends to leave enough margin to cover a store's operating costs. But the right multiplier still depends heavily on category:

  • 1.3×–1.5×: high-volume, low-touch goods like groceries and staples, where thin margins are offset by fast turnover.
  • 2.0× (keystone): the general retail default across most product categories.
  • 2.2×–3.0×: boutique, gift, and apparel items that sell more slowly and need a bigger per-unit cushion to stay profitable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Use the Wholesale Price Calculator instead — it prices from your production cost to what you charge retailers, and projects the resulting retail price so you can see how this tool's math applies downstream.

Margin is generally preferred in retail because it ties directly to revenue-based reporting. See our Markup vs Margin Calculator if you want to convert between the two or double-check which one a supplier or accountant is quoting you.
