How TikTok Engagement Rate Is Calculated
A video has 3,500 likes, 120 comments and 200 shares, which is 3,820 engagements. On 50,000 views the rate by views is 7.64%. If the account has 10,000 followers, the rate by followers is 38.2%.

The two bases answer different questions, and the gap between them can be large.
By Views or By Followers?
- By views measures how the people who watched the video responded. It suits TikTok because a video can be shown to people who do not follow the account.
- By followers compares engagement with the size of the account's audience. It can be worked out for any public account, so it is used to compare creators.
A video that reaches far beyond the account's followers will show a rate by followers above 100%. That is not an error. It means the video had more engagements than the account has followers.
Average Engagement Rate Over Several Videos
Five videos with 250,000 views, 17,500 likes, 600 comments and 1,000 shares in total have 19,100 engagements. By views the average rate is 19,100 ÷ 250,000 = 7.64%. By followers, with 10,000 followers, it is 19,100 ÷ 5 ÷ 10,000 = 38.2%.

Reading the Result
- Compare like with like. A rate by views and a rate by followers are different measures. So are rates that count different interactions.
- Use several videos. One video that spreads widely can distort a single reading.
- Track your own trend. Your earlier videos, measured the same way, are the most reliable comparison.
