Markdown to HTML Converter

Write or paste Markdown and see it rendered as you type, then copy clean HTML. Supports GitHub-style tables, task lists, strikethrough, footnotes and fenced code.

Converted in your browser; unsafe HTML such as scripts is removed from the preview.

The rendered document appears here as you type.

This Markdown to HTML converter shows your Markdown rendered as you type and gives you the HTML behind it. Use it to preview a README before pushing it, to turn notes or documentation into HTML for a website or email, or to check how a table or list will come out. It follows GitHub Flavored Markdown, so tables, task lists and fenced code blocks work as they do on GitHub.

Tables

A table needs a header row and a separator row of dashes. Colons in the separator set the alignment of each column:

| Left | Right | Center |
|:-----|------:|:------:|
| a | 10 | x |

The columns do not need to line up in the source; one pipe between each cell is enough. To put a pipe character inside a cell, write it as \|.

Using the HTML

The HTML output contains only the content, without styles, so it takes on the look of the page you paste it into: a CMS, a blog editor in HTML mode or an email template. Code blocks get a language-… class, which syntax highlighters such as Prism and highlight.js use to colour the code. For a stand-alone file, download it: the .html download always includes a page wrapper with readable default styling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert Markdown to HTML?

Type or paste Markdown, or open a .md file such as a README, and the rendered result appears in Preview as you type. Switch to the HTML tab to see and copy the code, or download it as an .html file that opens in any browser. Turn on Full HTML page to get a complete document with a <head> and simple styling instead of just the body content.

Which Markdown features are supported?

Everything in standard Markdown plus GitHub Flavored Markdown: tables with column alignment, task lists with [ ] and [x], ~~strikethrough~~, automatic links for URLs, and fenced code blocks with a language name. Footnotes written as [^1] are supported too. Headings, bold, italics, quotes, lists, links and images work as usual.

Why doesn't a single line break show in the preview?

In Markdown, a single Enter is treated as a space, so text you wrap for readability stays one paragraph. Leave an empty line to start a new paragraph, or end a line with two spaces to force a break. Turn on Line break on single Enter to make every new line a <br>, as GitHub comments and many chat apps do.

Is HTML inside Markdown allowed?

Yes, Markdown passes HTML tags through. That is also how Markdown can carry harmful code, such as <script> or <img onerror=…>. The preview always removes it with DOMPurify, and the HTML output does too unless you turn off Remove unsafe HTML, for example when the Markdown is your own and the page will be checked elsewhere.

What is GitHub Flavored Markdown?

GitHub's extension of CommonMark, the standard specification of Markdown. It adds tables, task lists, strikethrough and automatic links, and is used in READMEs, issues and pull requests on GitHub and in many other tools. A README written for GitHub renders here much as it does there, apart from GitHub's own additions such as @mentions and issue links.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, in a background thread so even a very long document does not freeze the page.
