Where the Scroll Wheel Actually Came From
The scroll wheel isn't as old as the mouse itself. KYE Systems shipped the first commercial mouse with a wheel, the Genius EasyScroll, in 1995 — but it was Microsoft's IntelliMouse, released in July 1996 alongside scroll-wheel support in Office 97, that turned the idea into an industry standard. Notches, Lines, and Why Scroll Distance Varies

Smooth-Scroll Wheels vs. Standard Detented Wheels
Not every mouse uses a stepped, clicky wheel. Logitech's higher-end mice use a "free-spin" or magnetic wheel (MagSpeed) that can disengage its ratchet and spin freely, firing a continuous stream of very fine scroll events instead of discrete clicks — useful for flying through long spreadsheets or documents. This shows up as scrolling that jumps unevenly or stutters instead of moving smoothly, and it typically gets worse over time as dust and wear accumulate rather than resolving on its own. What This Test Actually Measures
This tool counts wheel (scroll) events your browser receives while you scroll inside the box — up notches, down notches, and how many arrive per second. It can't see inside the mouse's physical encoder, so it infers a possible skip from timing irregularities in the events it does receive, rather than reading the hardware directly. That makes it a useful first check for a scroll wheel that feels wrong, but a wheel that still shows occasional flagged skips under very fast, erratic scrolling isn't necessarily faulty — test with slow, deliberate scrolling for the clearest read on genuine hardware skipping.
