Orc Name Generator
Male and female orc names in classic, Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, D&D and funny styles, plus tribe and clan names.
Male Orc Names
Related Name Generators
This orc name generator makes male and female orc names in five styles, because an orc is named differently in Middle-earth, Azeroth, Tamriel and a D&D table. Pick the setting you are writing or playing in and the names follow its structure: a single harsh name, a name with an earned family name, a gro- or gra- clan name, or a name with an epithet. It also makes orc tribe and clan names, and a set of funny orc names for the less serious warband.
How Orc Names Differ by Setting
Every style shares the sound Tolkien gave his Orcs, with hard stops like g, k, d and z and short syllables. What changes is the structure around the first name.
| Setting | Name structure | Examples from the source |
|---|---|---|
| Tolkien's Middle-earth | One name, no surname | Uglúk, Shagrat, Gorbag, Grishnákh, Azog, Bolg |
| Warcraft | Given name + compound family name, often tied to a clan | Orgrim Doomhammer, Grommash Hellscream; clans such as Frostwolf, Warsong and Blackrock |
| The Elder Scrolls | Given name + gro- (male) or gra- (female) + clan or stronghold | Gortwog gro-Nagorm, Mazoga |
| Dungeons & Dragons | Short given name, often with an earned epithet | Krusk, Thokk, Mhurren, Kansif, Sutha (half-orc names in the Player's Handbook) |
The generator does not hand back those characters' names. It builds new ones from the same kinds of syllables, and it skips family names that already belong to a well-known Warcraft character.
Where the Harsh Sound Comes From
Tolkien designed the Black Speech of Mordor to sound unpleasant to an English ear. The Ring inscription gives the flavour: "Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul." Words such as ghâsh (fire), snaga (slave) and uruk (orc) show the pattern of back-of-the-mouth consonants and clipped endings. He did the opposite for his Elvish languages, which is why an orc name and an elf name are so easy to tell apart.
If you would rather build an orcish name by hand, these pieces recur across most settings:
- Openings: Gr-, Gor-, Ug-, Shag-, Dur-, Maz-.
- Endings: -ûk, -ash, -ub, -og, -rat, -dush for male names, and -a, -ga, -sha, -ka for female names.
- Length: one or two syllables. Three is already long for an orc.
Orc Names in The Lord of the Rings
Tolkien named only a handful of Orcs. Uglúk leads Saruman's Uruk-hai, Grishnákh serves Mordor, and Shagrat and Gorbag are the two captains who quarrel at Cirith Ungol. Azog and Bolg, father and son, rule the Orcs of Moria and the North. Lurtz, the Uruk who kills Boromir on screen, does not exist in the books and was created for the 2001 film. If you want a LOTR orc name, use the Classic style and keep it to one word with no surname or title.
Names for Orc Warriors and Hunters
An orc's class rarely changes the first name. It changes the second part. Warrior names point at a weapon or a deed, as with Warcraft's Saurfang and Doomhammer, or a D&D epithet like "the Skull-Taker". A hunter's name points at a beast or at tracking, and Warcraft's best-known beastmaster, Rexxar, travels with a bear called Misha. Use the Warcraft style for a family name or the D&D style for an epithet, then keep generating until the second part fits the class.
Female Orc Names
Tolkien wrote in a 1963 letter that "there must have been orc-women", but none appears or is named in his books. Female orc names are therefore an invention of the games and novels that came later, and those settings agree on the approach: keep the hard consonants and change the ending. Warcraft has Draka, Aggra and Geyah, the Elder Scrolls has Mazoga and Urzoth, and the D&D Player's Handbook suggests Baggi, Kansif and Sutha for half-orc women. Choose Female in the generator to get names built the same way. If your character is only half orc, the Half-Orc Name Generator mixes in human naming as well.
Orc Tribe and Clan Names
Orc groups are usually named after a body part, a weapon or a mark of violence: Tolkien's Orcs march under the badges of the Red Eye and the White Hand, and Warcraft has the Shattered Hand and Bleeding Hollow clans. The tribe and clan option follows that formula ("Broken Tusk Clan", "Howling Fang Warband") and also produces single-word orcish clan names for a stronghold. For tribes that are not orcish, use the general Tribe Name Generator.
Funny Orc Names
Orc names are funny when the title undercuts the menace. A warrior called Skullsplitter is standard. One called "Grub the Mildly Annoyed" or "Mogga Breaks-Chairs" is a comic-relief NPC your players will remember. The Funny style pairs a short, blunt name with that kind of title, which works for one-shots, goblin-and-orc comedy campaigns and Warhammer-style Ork mobs. For smaller and sneakier troublemakers, try the Goblin Name Generator.
How to Use the Orc Name Generator
- Choose what you need: Pick character names, or switch to tribe and clan names for a warband, stronghold or guild.
- Pick a naming style: Classic gives single Black Speech-style names. Warcraft adds an earned family name, Elder Scrolls adds a gro- or gra- clan name, D&D adds an epithet, and Funny pairs a silly name with a joke title.
- Set male or female: The two sets use different endings, and the Elder Scrolls style switches between gro- and gra-.
- Generate and copy: Each press gives six new names. Use the copy button beside the one you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the word "orc" come from?
It traces back to Old English "orcnēas", a word for monstrous beings that appears once in Beowulf. Tolkien adopted the form "orc" for the goblin-soldiers of Middle-earth, and almost every later fantasy orc descends from his version.
Do orcs have last names?
It depends on the setting. Tolkien's Orcs have a single name. Warcraft orcs often carry a compound family name such as Doomhammer or Hellscream. Elder Scrolls Orcs use gro- (male) or gra- (female) followed by a clan or stronghold name. D&D orcs more often take an earned epithet than a surname.
What are good female orc names?
Tolkien never named a female Orc, so female orc names come from later settings. The D&D Player's Handbook lists Baggi, Kansif, Sutha and Vola for half-orcs, Warcraft has Draka, Aggra and Geyah, and Elder Scrolls has names like Mazoga and Urzoth. The generator's female sets follow the same patterns: the usual hard consonants with endings in -a, -ga, -sha or -ka.
Can I use these names for a World of Warcraft orc hunter or warrior?
Yes, but use the first name on its own. Blizzard's naming policy limits a character name to 2-12 characters with no spaces, numbers or symbols, so a surname or clan name has to stay in your character's backstory.
How do Skyrim and Elder Scrolls orc names work?
Elder Scrolls Orcs (Orsimer) have a short given name of one or two syllables followed by gro- for males or gra- for females and then a clan or stronghold name, as in Gortwog gro-Nagorm. UESP's lore notes describe hard consonants like g, k, z, d and r as typical and the vowel e as rare.
Is "ork" the same as "orc"?
They are the same archetype with different spellings. "Orc" is Tolkien's spelling and the one used by D&D, Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls. "Ork" is the Warhammer spelling, and Warhammer 40,000 Ork names lean harder into comedy, which is why the Funny style suits them.
