Two Numbers Drive Affiliate Income: Commission and Conversion
Affiliate commission per sale is simple multiplication, but monthly income depends just as much on conversion rate — the percentage of clicks that actually become a sale — which is where most income estimates go wrong. A high commission rate on a link nobody buys from earns nothing; a modest rate on a link with genuine buying intent behind it can outperform it easily.
Monthly Commission = Clicks × Conversion Rate % × Order Value × Commission Rate %
Commission Rates by Program Type
| Affiliate Program Type | Typical Commission Range |
|---|---|
| Physical Retail (e.g. Amazon Associates) | 1% – 10% |
| SaaS / Software | 20% – 50%, often recurring monthly |
| Info-Products / Courses | 30% – 50% |
| Financial Services / Insurance | Flat fee per lead, often $20–$200+ |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Real programs often apply cookie windows (a sale only counts if it happens within a set number of days after the click), exclude returns and refunds from final payout, and sometimes tier commission rates by monthly sales volume — all of which can reduce actual earnings below a simple estimate.
Affiliate income is performance-based — you only earn when a referred sale actually happens. A sponsorship, calculated with our Influencer Rate Calculator, is a flat fee paid regardless of resulting sales.
