Dropshipping Profit
💡 Formula Guide
This dropshipping profit calculator shows what one order leaves after every cost. Enter the selling price, what the supplier charges, shipping, your ad cost per order and the platform you sell on. It returns profit per order, margin, the most you can spend on ads to break even and the profit for a month.
How Dropshipping Profit Is Calculated
A product sells for $29.99 with free shipping on Shopify. The supplier charges $6.50 and $3.20 for shipping. Selling fees are 29.99 × 2.9% + 0.30 = $1.17. A 3% refund rate takes $0.90, and $54 of monthly costs over 100 orders is $0.54. Ads cost $8 per order. Profit is $9.68 per order, a margin of 32.3%, and $968.06 for the month.
The monthly share is your subscriptions and apps divided by your orders. It falls as orders rise, so the same product is more profitable per order at higher volume.
Break-Even Ad Cost and ROAS
Before ads, the example order leaves $17.68. That is the most you can pay in ads for one order. Dividing revenue by it gives a break-even ROAS of 29.99 ÷ 17.68 = 1.70.
| Ad cost per order | Profit per order | ROAS at that ad cost |
|---|---|---|
| $0.00 | $17.68 | No ad spend |
| $5.00 | $12.68 | 6.00 |
| $8.00 | $9.68 | 3.75 |
| $12.00 | $5.68 | 2.50 |
| $17.68 | $0.00 | 1.70 |
| $20.00 | −$2.32 | 1.50 |
Ad cost per order is your ad spend divided by the orders it produced. The CPA Calculator works it out, and the Break-Even ROAS Calculator covers the ROAS side in more detail.
Selling Fees by Platform
The same order on three platforms, with no monthly costs, a 3% refund rate and $8 of ads:
| Platform | Fee used | Fees on $29.99 | Profit per order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | 2.9% + $0.30 | $1.17 | $10.22 |
| Etsy | 9.5% + $0.45 | $3.30 | $8.09 |
| Amazon | 15% | $4.50 | $6.89 |
Shopify's 2.9% + $0.30 is the online card rate on the Basic plan. Etsy's 9.5% + $0.45 is the 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing and the $0.20 listing fee added together. Amazon's 15% is the referral fee in most listed categories. All three charge the percentage on the price plus shipping. Fees change and differ by country and plan, so check the platform's own fee page, or choose Other and enter your own rate.
For a full breakdown of one platform, use the Shopify Fee Calculator, the Etsy Fee Calculator or the Amazon Seller Fee Calculator.
Costs That Are Easy to Miss
- Refunds. With dropshipping the product is often not returned to you, so a refund can cost the full order. Use your real refund rate.
- Chargebacks and payment disputes. These carry their own fees and are not in the selling fee.
- Currency conversion. Paying a supplier in another currency adds a conversion cost.
- Taxes and duties. Sales tax, VAT and import duties depend on where you and your customers are, and are not included here.
- Your time. Customer service and order handling are not priced in.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate dropshipping profit?
Take the selling price plus any shipping you charge, and subtract the supplier's price, the shipping you pay, selling fees, ad cost per order, refunds and a share of your monthly costs. A $29.99 order with a $6.50 item, $3.20 shipping, $1.17 fees, $8 of ads, 3% refunds and 54 cents of monthly costs leaves $9.68.
What is break-even ad cost per order?
It is the profit on an order before ads. If an order leaves $17.68 before advertising, you can spend up to $17.68 on ads to get that order without losing money.
What is break-even ROAS for dropshipping?
Revenue per order divided by the break-even ad cost. With $29.99 of revenue and a break-even ad cost of $17.68, break-even ROAS is 1.70. A campaign has to return more than $1.70 for each $1 of ad spend to make a profit.
How are refunds handled here?
The refund rate is taken as a share of revenue and subtracted from every order. It assumes you return the money and do not get the supplier's cost back. If your supplier refunds you, use a lower rate.
Which selling fees does the calculator use?
Shopify 2.9% + $0.30, Etsy 9.5% + $0.45 and Amazon 15%, each on the price plus shipping. Monthly plan fees are not built in. Enter them with your apps in the monthly field. You can also choose other and type your own rate.
Does this include tax?
No. Sales tax or VAT collected from the buyer, import duties and income tax on your profit are not included.
