How weighted grades actually work

Most courses don't average every assignment equally — they group work into categories (homework, quizzes, exams, participation) and assign each category a percentage of the final grade. Your final grade is the sum of each category's average multiplied by its weight, not a simple average of every individual score.

Worked example

Say a course weights Homework 20%, Quizzes 30%, and the Final Exam 50%:

  • Homework average: 90% × 0.20 = 18
  • Quiz average: 85% × 0.30 = 25.5
  • Final exam: 78% × 0.50 = 39
  • Final grade: 18 + 25.5 + 39 = 82.5%

Notice the exam — despite being one test — outweighs months of homework and quizzes combined. That's the practical value of tracking weighted grades rather than guessing from raw scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a weighted and unweighted grade?

An unweighted grade averages all scores equally. A weighted grade multiplies each category (e.g. homework, exams, participation) by its assigned percentage of the final grade before summing — so a 30%-weighted final exam affects your grade far more than a 5%-weighted quiz.

How do I calculate a weighted grade by hand?

Multiply each category's average score by its weight, then add the results together. Example: Homework 90% × 20%, Quizzes 85% × 30%, Final Exam 78% × 50% = 18 + 25.5 + 39 = 82.5% final grade.

Why do letter grade cutoffs vary between schools?

There's no single national standard. Many US schools use 90-100=A, 80-89=B, etc., but plenty use different cutoffs (e.g. 93+ for an A), and other countries use entirely different scales. Confirm your specific institution's grading scale rather than assuming a default.
