CGPA Is a Weighted Average, Not a Simple Average

The most common mistake students make is averaging their semester GPAs directly — adding them up and dividing by the number of semesters. That only gives the correct CGPA if every semester carried exactly the same number of credit hours, which is rarely true (elective-heavy semesters, thesis/project semesters, or a reduced course load all change the credit-hour total).

CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Total Credit Hours)

For example, a 3.8 GPA in an 18-credit-hour semester contributes more "quality points" (68.4) to your CGPA than a 3.8 GPA in a 12-credit-hour semester would (45.6) — so two students with identical semester GPA lists but different credit-hour loads end up with different CGPAs.

Converting CGPA to Percentage

On a standard 4.0-point scale, the most widely used quick conversion — used by students on multiple continents, not just one country — is:

Percentage = CGPA × 25

This is a linear approximation — a 3.2 CGPA converts to roughly 80%, and a 4.0 CGPA to 100%. It's useful for a quick estimate (job applications that ask for "approximate percentage," personal tracking, comparing offers), but it is not necessarily the exact figure your university's examination department would issue on an official equivalence certificate — institutions vary, and some apply a different formula for that specific purpose. Always get the official figure from your registrar when a percentage is required for a formal application.

How to Use This Calculator

  • Semester GPA → CGPA tab: add a row per completed semester, enter that semester's GPA (0–4) and its total credit hours — the CGPA updates instantly as you type.
  • CGPA ↔ Percentage tab: type into either the CGPA field or the Percentage field — the other one converts automatically.
  • No data saved: everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA is usually a single semester's average; CGPA is the credit-hour-weighted average across all semesters completed so far. A heavier-credit semester pulls your CGPA more than a lighter one — a plain average of your GPA numbers isn't your real CGPA unless every semester had identical credit hours.

How is CGPA actually calculated?

CGPA = (each semester's GPA × its credit hours, summed) ÷ (total credit hours). It's a weighted average, standard across 4.0-scale universities worldwide — including US and Pakistan's HEC-regulated institutions.

Is 'CGPA × 25' the official conversion formula?

It's the commonly used quick approximation (same as CGPA ÷ 4 × 100). Universities vary in how they calculate an official percentage for equivalence certificates — confirm with your registrar for anything official.

Why does one more semester barely move my CGPA?

Because CGPA weights by credit hours, not semester count. Once you've built up a large credit-hour history, one new semester is a smaller fraction of the total, so it shifts your CGPA less than it would have in your first year.

Can my CGPA go above 4.0?

Not on a standard 4.0-point scale — every semester's GPA is capped at 4.0, so the weighted average can't exceed it either.
