This converter turns an ICO file into a PNG. An icon file usually holds the same picture at several sizes, and the converter saves the largest of them as a PNG with its transparent background. Use it to open a Windows icon or a website favicon in an image editor, or to reuse it where ICO files are not accepted. Files are converted in your browser and are not uploaded.
How to Convert ICO to PNG
- Add the icons: drag one or more .ico files into the box above or click to choose them.
- Wait a moment: each file is converted as soon as it is added.
- Download: save each PNG, or download all of them as a ZIP.
What Is Inside an ICO File
ICO is a container. It starts with a short list and is followed by the images the list describes, so that Windows can pick a size to suit each place an icon appears.
| Size | Where it is typically used |
|---|---|
| 16 × 16 | Browser tabs, small lists |
| 32 × 32 | Taskbar and desktop shortcuts at normal scaling |
| 48 × 48 | Larger icon views |
| 256 × 256 | The largest size the format allows, used for big icon views |
Each image inside is stored either as a bitmap or, in newer files, as a PNG. The converter handles both. A file with only a 16 pixel image gives a 16 pixel PNG, so check the size of the result if it looks smaller than you expected.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is the better target for an icon. It keeps the transparent background and stores flat colors and sharp edges without loss. JPG has no transparency and blurs hard edges slightly, so use the ICO to JPG Converter only where a JPG is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert an ICO file to PNG?
Add the .ico file to the converter above. It is converted at once, and you can download the PNG, or all of them as a ZIP if you added several files.
An ICO file holds several sizes. Which one do I get?
The largest. The converter reads the list of images inside the file and takes the one with the most pixels. If two have the same size, it takes the one with more colors. The other sizes are left out.
Is the transparent background kept?
Yes. PNG supports transparency in the same way an icon does, so the background stays transparent.
Can I convert a favicon.ico from a website?
Yes. Save the site's favicon.ico file and add it here. Many favicons only contain small sizes such as 16, 32 and 48 pixels, so the PNG will be small too. Converting cannot add detail that is not in the file.
How do I get a PNG larger than the icon?
You can enlarge the PNG afterwards, but it will look soft or blocky because the detail is not there. For a sharp large image, find the original artwork or a vector version of the logo.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The icon is read and converted by your browser on your own device.
