This DDS to PNG converter turns game texture files into ordinary PNG images that any editor or viewer can open. DDS is a format built for graphics cards, which is why Windows Photos, most browsers and many editors cannot display it. PNG keeps the texture's transparency and stores the pixels without further loss, so it is the usual format for viewing or editing a texture outside the game. Drop in one .dds file or a batch and download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
Which DDS Files This Converter Can Read
DDS is a container, and the texture inside can be compressed in several ways. The converter handles the older and most widely used types.
| DDS type | Also called | Supported |
|---|---|---|
| DXT1 | BC1 | Yes |
| DXT3 | BC2 | Yes |
| DXT5 | BC3 | Yes |
| Uncompressed | 24-bit RGB, 32-bit RGBA or BGRA | Yes |
| BC4 and BC5 | ATI1 and ATI2, common for normal maps | No |
| BC6H and BC7 | Used by many newer games | No |
If a file is not supported, the converter reports an error for that file and carries on with the others. Microsoft's free texconv command-line tool and Paint.NET can both open the newer BC7 textures.
What Changes When DDS Becomes PNG
- Transparency: kept. The alpha channel of the texture becomes the alpha channel of the PNG.
- Mipmaps: only the largest image is converted. The smaller copies stored in the DDS are left out.
- Quality: the PNG is an exact copy of the decoded texture. Compression artefacts that the DDS already had stay in the picture.
- File size: usually larger. DDS block compression has a fixed ratio, and PNG has to store every pixel exactly.
Why Game Textures Use DDS
Microsoft introduced DDS with DirectX to store textures in the form a graphics card needs at run time. The data is compressed in fixed blocks of 4 × 4 pixels, which lets the card decode only the small area it is drawing and keep the texture compressed in memory. PNG compresses a whole image for storage and has to be fully unpacked before use, which suits editors and the web but not rendering.
This is why modders move between the two formats all the time. A texture is converted from DDS to PNG to be repainted in an image editor, then exported back to DDS for the game to load. A DDS file also usually carries mipmaps, a chain of half-size copies that the card uses for distant objects to avoid shimmering.
How to Convert DDS to PNG
- Add your files: drag and drop .dds files, or click to select them.
- Wait for the previews: each texture is converted automatically as soon as it is added.
- Download: save PNG files one at a time or all together as a ZIP.
If you only need a quick preview to share and do not need transparency, the DDS to JPG Converter gives smaller files. For Targa textures, use the TGA to PNG Converter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a DDS file?
DDS stands for DirectDraw Surface. It is Microsoft's texture format for DirectX, and it stores image data in a compressed form that a graphics card can use directly, often together with smaller copies of the image called mipmaps. Most PC games store their textures as DDS.
Why does my DDS file fail to convert?
The most likely reason is that it uses a newer compression type. This converter reads DXT1, DXT3 and DXT5 textures and uncompressed DDS files. It cannot read BC7, BC6H, BC4 or BC5, which many newer games use. For those files, use a desktop tool such as Microsoft's texconv or Paint.NET, both of which are free.
Do I need to download a DDS converter?
Not for the supported formats. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, so there is nothing to install and the files are not uploaded.
Is DDS to PNG conversion lossless?
The PNG stores exactly the pixels the DDS decodes to. DXT compression is itself lossy, though, so any blockiness or colour banding already in the texture is carried into the PNG. Converting cannot restore detail that was removed when the DDS was made.
Does the PNG keep transparency?
Yes. The alpha channel in a DXT3, DXT5 or 32-bit uncompressed texture is written to the PNG's alpha channel. DXT1 textures have at most one-bit transparency, so their pixels are either fully visible or fully transparent.
What happens to the mipmaps?
Only the largest image is converted. PNG has no way to store the chain of smaller copies. If you turn the PNG back into a DDS later, your texture tool can generate the mipmaps again.
