Courtly (troubadours and minstrels)

Male Bard Names

This bard name generator makes names for bards in Dungeons & Dragons and other fantasy settings. Choose a courtly troubadour, a tavern fiddler or a Norse skald, and it gives a first name with a surname, such as Lisette Larksong, or with a stage epithet, such as Tom the Barefoot. It also names a whole troupe, as in The Gilded Larks.

Three Styles of Bard Name

StyleWho it suitsExamples
CourtlyCourt musicians, troubadours and College of Lore bardsLucien Silverstring, Isolde the Nightingale
FolkTavern players, travelling fiddlers and street singersBess Merryfoot, Tom the Barefoot
SkaldNorthern poets and College of Valor bardsBragi Honey-Voice, Jorunn Word-Hoard

The courtly style draws on French and romance first names with surnames about music. The folk style uses short English pet names of the kind found in old ballads. The skald style has no surnames, because the Norse did not use family names. A skald takes a byname, and the generator always gives one.

The Real Poets Behind the Bard

NameWhere and whenWhat they did
BardWales, Ireland and ScotlandProfessional poets who kept the praise, history and genealogy of a chief's family
TroubadourSouthern France, 12th and 13th centuriesPoet-composers who wrote songs in Occitan, many about courtly love. Women who did the same were called trobairitz
MinstrelMedieval EuropePaid entertainers who sang, played and told stories, in a lord's household or on the road
SkaldNorway and Iceland, Viking Age and afterPoets who made complex verse in praise of kings and their battles

Several first names in the skald style belonged to real poets. Bragi Boddason is the earliest skald whose verse survives, Egil Skallagrimsson is the hero of his own saga, and Jorunn was known as skaldmaer, the poet-maiden. Their bynames are a good model too: Gunnlaug was called Serpent-Tongue for his sharp verses.

How to Choose a Bard Name

  • Say it aloud. A bard is announced, heckled and remembered by name. Choose one that sounds good when spoken.
  • Match the instrument. Silverstring suits a lute player and Pennywhistle a piper. A singer can take a bird's name.
  • Let the epithet tell a story. Twice-Encored is a boast. The Late is a joke at the bard's expense, and players at the table will ask how it was earned.
  • Give the bard somewhere to play. The Tavern Name Generator names the inn, and the Guild Name Generator names the college or company the bard belongs to.

Bards of Other Peoples

The first names here are human. For a bard of another people, take the first name from the Elf, Dwarf, Orc, Halfling or Tiefling Name Generator, then generate a stage name here and keep only the epithet.

How to Use the Bard Name Generator

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good name for a bard?

One that is easy to say aloud and sounds as if the bard chose it. Lisette Larksong suits a court singer, Tom the Barefoot suits a tavern fiddler and Bragi Honey-Voice suits a northern poet. A bard is a performer, so a name with a rhythm to it, or one that an innkeeper could shout across a room, works better than a long and solemn one.

Do bards use stage names?

It fits the character well. A bard lives by reputation, and an epithet such as the Silver-Tongued or Three-Verses is the kind of name an audience gives and a performer keeps. Use the stage name on the road and keep the birth name for the backstory.

What is the difference between a bard, a minstrel and a skald?

A bard was a professional poet among the Celtic peoples of Wales, Ireland and Scotland. A minstrel was a paid entertainer of medieval Europe who sang and played. A troubadour was a poet-composer of southern France in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and a skald was a poet at the courts of Norse kings. Fantasy games use bard for all of them.

How do I name an orc, dwarf or elf bard?

Take the first name from the character's own people and add a bard's stage name to it. An orc bard might keep an orc name and earn the epithet the Loud. The Orc, Dwarf and Elf Name Generators on this site give the first part.

What should I call a bard's band?

Choose the troupe option. It joins a describing word to a word for performers, as in The Gilded Larks or The Wandering Pipers. The same pattern works for an adventuring party led by a bard.

Can I use these names in a game or a book?

Yes. The names are built from old first names and common words. The skald style uses real Old Norse first names, which are free for anyone to use.
