Related Name Generators
This dragon name generator makes names for the winged, fire-breathing dragons of Western fantasy and D&D. Choose the kind of dragon and it gives a long, heavy name with a title to match, such as Vorathrax the Ember Tyrant, or the name alone. For the dragons of China and Japan, which are named in a different way, use the Chinese Dragon Name Generator or the Japanese Dragon Name Generator.
Six Kinds of Dragon
| Kind | D&D colours | Example title |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Red, gold, brass | the Ember Tyrant |
| Frost | White, silver | the White Silence |
| Storm | Blue, bronze | the Thunder Above |
| Forest and venom | Green | Bane of the Deepwood |
| Swamp and shadow | Black, copper | the Black Tide |
| Ancient hoard | Any | Wyrm of the Seven Peaks |
The title is what people in the story call the dragon. A village does not know the name of the thing in the mountain. It knows what the thing did, and that is the title.
Famous Dragons and Their Names
| Dragon | From | About the name |
|---|---|---|
| Fafnir | Norse legend | A dwarf who became a dragon to guard his gold, killed by Sigurd |
| Smaug | The Hobbit | From an old Germanic verb meaning to squeeze through a hole |
| Tiamat | Babylonian myth, later D&D | A sea goddess in the myth, the queen of evil dragons in the game |
| Y Ddraig Goch | Wales | Welsh for the red dragon, the one on the national flag |
The dragon in Beowulf, the oldest in English, has no name at all. The habit of giving a dragon a long, alien-sounding name of its own is a modern one, and it is the pattern this generator follows.
Using a Dragon Name in a Campaign
Let the players hear the title first and the name later. A dragon's true name can be something found in an old book, and saying it can matter. Age changes the title as well: D&D ranks dragons as wyrmling, young, adult and ancient, and a dragon that was once the Red Hunger may be called Eldest of the Brood a thousand years on.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a good dragon name?
Length and weight. Dragon names in fantasy usually run to three syllables, with rolling or hissing sounds and a heavy ending, as in Vorathrax or Thalivyra. A title then says what the dragon has done or where it rules: the Ember Tyrant, Wyrm of the Seven Peaks.
What are good female dragon names?
The same roots with endings such as -thra, -vyra, -ryss and -sera: Kazavyra, Ithyryss, Morasera. Dragons in most settings are as dangerous female as male, so the names are no softer. Choose Female in the generator for this style.
How are dragons named in D&D?
Dungeons & Dragons gives its dragons long personal names, often with a title that mortals use because the real name is hard to say. The game sorts dragons by colour. Chromatic dragons, red, blue, green, black and white, are generally evil, and metallic dragons, gold, silver, bronze, copper and brass, are generally good.
Which kind should I pick for a red or a white dragon?
Fire for red and gold dragons, frost for white and silver, storm for blue and bronze, forest and venom for green, and swamp and shadow for black. The ancient hoard titles suit any very old dragon, whatever its colour.
Where does the word dragon come from?
From Greek drakon, a large serpent, through Latin draco. The fire-breathing, winged, treasure-hoarding dragon of European stories took shape in the Middle Ages. Smaug, in The Hobbit, is the model for most modern ones, and Tolkien took the name from an old Germanic verb meaning to squeeze through a hole.
Does this generator make Chinese or Japanese dragon names?
No. This one is for Western and D&D dragons. Eastern dragons are named differently, with a describing word and the word for dragon, and have their own generators, linked below.
