Related Name Generators
This firbolg name generator makes names for firbolg characters in Dungeons & Dragons. Firbolgs do not name each other as other peoples do, so it gives two kinds. An elven-style name, such as Tamoren or Maerwyn, is what a firbolg uses with outsiders. A deed name, such as Follows-the-Stream or Mosswalker, is how the clan at home knows them.
Two Kinds of Firbolg Name
| Kind | Who uses it | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Elven-style name | Outsiders: traders, innkeepers, the rest of the party | Kelarion, Velendil, Sylira, Halessa |
| Deed name | The firbolg's own clan | Mends-the-Old-Bridge, Barksinger, Slow-to-Anger |
What the Rulebook Says
Firbolgs became a playable race in Volo's Guide to Monsters. Its note on names is short: firbolgs adopt elven names when they must deal with outsiders, though the concept of names strikes them as strange, and they know the animals and plants of the forest by their deeds, habits and other actions and not by formal names. The book gives no list of firbolg names. Everything this generator produces follows that note, and none of it is copied from a list.
Three Shapes of Deed Name
| Shape | How it is built | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| A deed | What the firbolg did, written with hyphens | Carries-the-Fawn, Guards-the-Ford |
| One word | A thing of the forest and what the firbolg does with it | Mosswalker, Stonesleeper, Fernsinger |
| A habit | What the firbolg is always like | Quiet-as-Snow, Late-to-Supper |
Using Both Names in Play
- Introduce the character with the elven-style name. It is the one the firbolg would give at an inn.
- Let the deed name come out later. When another firbolg appears and calls your character Late-to-Supper, the table learns something.
- Tie the deed to the backstory. Mends-the-Old-Bridge needs a bridge, and a reason it was broken.
For a longer list of elven names, see the Elf Name Generator. Firbolgs often become druids or rangers, and there are generators for druid names and ranger names. Their neighbours in the wood can be named with the Fairy Name Generator.
How to Use the Firbolg Name Generator
- Choose the kind of name: An elven-style name is what outsiders call the firbolg. A deed name is what the clan calls them.
- Choose a gender: This applies to elven-style names. Deed names are not gendered.
- Generate and copy: Each press gives six new names.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do firbolgs get their names?
According to Volo's Guide to Monsters, firbolgs take elven names when they have to deal with outsiders, although the idea of a name seems strange to them. Among themselves they know the creatures of the forest, and each other, by deeds and habits.
What is a firbolg deed name?
A short description of something the firbolg did or always does, used in place of a name: Mends-the-Old-Bridge, Follows-the-Stream, Slow-to-Anger. The rulebook describes the custom but prints no list, so the deed names here are this site's own.
What are good female firbolg names?
Maerwyn, Sylira, Velanna, Halessa and Kelwyn are typical of this generator. Choose female for six more. A deed name suits any firbolg.
Do firbolgs have last names?
Not in the rules. A firbolg belongs to a small clan that keeps one stretch of forest, and outsiders may add the name of that forest, as in Tamoren of the Birchwood.
Where does the word firbolg come from?
From Irish legend. The Fir Bolg are one of the peoples said to have held Ireland before the Tuatha Dé Danann. The game borrowed the word. Its gentle forest giants are its own invention.
Can a firbolg change name during a campaign?
Yes, and it fits the custom well. A deed name follows a deed, so the party can give the firbolg a new one after something memorable.
