Robot Names

This robot name generator makes names for robots, androids and other machines in stories, games and hobby projects. A robot's name depends on who gave it, so there are four kinds: a model code from a factory, a friendly name from an owner, an acronym from an engineer, and a blunt name for a heavy machine. Acronyms are shown with the words they stand for.

Four Kinds of Robot Name

KindWho would give itExamples
Model codeThe factoryKX-42, Unit 317, Halden Mk IV
FriendlyA family, a child, a crewPip, Little Sprocket, Fizz-8
AcronymAn engineer or a companyM.A.R.A. (Mobile Autonomous Repair Assistant)
Heavy machineThe people who work beside itBulwark-9, Anvil Mk II

How the Acronyms Are Built

Every acronym has four letters. The first word says how the machine is made (Mobile, Tactical, Portable). The second says how it is run (Autonomous, Integrated, Universal). The third is its job (Repair, Survey, Cargo), and the fourth is what it is (Assistant, Operator, Unit). Because the letters fall as consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel, the result can be spoken: K.I.M.A., S.E.L.O., R.O.L.A. A crew would drop the full stops within a week and call the machine Kima.

Giving a Robot Two Names

  • Start with the code. It is what is printed on the casing, and it tells the reader the robot is one of many.
  • Add the name people use. RT-63 becomes Artie. The moment someone renames a machine is a moment in the story.
  • Let the robot choose. A machine that picks its own name has told you it has preferences.
  • Keep heavy machines blunt. Nobody calls a loader Sparkle. One hard word and a number is enough.

For minds without a body and peoples who are not human, the Alien Name Generator has a machine option. Human characters in the same setting are in the Cyberpunk Name Generator, clockwork ones in the Steampunk Name Generator, and the place they all live in the Space Station Name Generator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good name for a robot?

It depends on who named it. A factory gives a code, such as KX-42. A family gives a pet name, such as Pip. An engineer gives an acronym. Decide who named the robot in your story and choose that kind.

What are some cute robot names?

Pip, Blip, Nib, Tink, Fizz, Button and Wobble are typical of the friendly option. Short names with a p, b or k in them sound small and quick.

How do robot acronyms work?

Each letter stands for a word, and the words describe the machine: M.A.R.A. is Mobile Autonomous Repair Assistant. The generator builds the four letters as consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel, so the result can be said aloud as a name.

Can I use these for a real robot, a chatbot or a product?

For a pet project, yes. For anything you will sell, search the name and check trademarks first. The generator avoids well-known products, but it cannot check every company's register.

What does Mk mean in a robot name?

Mark, meaning version. Halden Mk IV is the fourth version of a machine made by Halden. The maker names here are invented.

Are these robots from films or games?

No. Robots from films, games and shows are left out, and so are the names of real commercial robots.
