What Changes When AVIF Becomes PNG
- Transparency: Kept. A transparent background in the AVIF is transparent in the PNG.
- Quality: Nothing more is lost. PNG stores every pixel of the decoded picture exactly. It cannot bring back detail that the AVIF's own compression removed.
- File size: Much larger. In our test a 79 KB AVIF photograph became a 1.7 MB PNG. Flat graphics grow far less.
- Colour depth: The PNG is standard 8-bit. A 10-bit or HDR AVIF is brought down to the normal range.

What AVIF Is
AVIF stores a still picture using AV1, a video compression method published by the Alliance for Open Media, a group of technology companies, as a royalty-free standard. It gives smaller files than JPG, PNG or WebP for the same picture, and it supports transparency. Web browsers adopted it quickly. Editors and operating systems have been slower, which is why an AVIF saved from a website often has to be converted before it is useful.

The conversion step is. The PNG holds exactly what the AVIF decodes to. If the AVIF was saved with lossy compression, which most are, that earlier loss stays.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG does not discard any detail, and photographs do not compress well without that. A much larger file is normal. Choose JPG if size matters more than exactness.
Does it work in every browser?
The converter relies on the browser to read the AVIF. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all can. A few uncommon kinds of AVIF, such as 10-bit files with 4:2:2 colour, are not decoded by every browser. The converter reports those files and does not hand back a blank picture.
