BMP to JPG Converter

Convert BMP bitmap images to JPG. Files stay on your device.

This BMP to JPG converter is for bitmap files that are too large to send or upload. A BMP stores a photograph with no compression, so a single picture can run to several megabytes. Saved as a JPG at 90% quality, the same photograph takes roughly a tenth of the space and opens in every program. Add the files, wait a moment, and download the JPGs.

How to Convert BMP to JPG

  1. Select the bitmaps. Drag the .bmp files onto the upload box or click it to browse.
  2. Each one converts by itself. The old and new size appear under every result.
  3. Save the results. Download a single JPG, or all of them in a ZIP.

The same photograph saved as PNG was 2.44 MB. PNG keeps every pixel and JPG does not, and that is the whole difference in size.

What Stays the Same

The width and height do not change, and neither do the colours in any way you would notice on a photo. The JPG holds the picture only. The file name is kept, with .jpg in place of .bmp.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much smaller is the JPG?

Much smaller for photographs. In our test a 3.12 MB bitmap photo became 378 KB, which is 88% less. Small graphics went from 10 to 32 KB down to about 3 KB.

Does converting BMP to JPG lose quality?

Slightly. JPG removes fine detail to save space. At the 90% quality used here the change is hard to see on a photograph. On sharp text or line art, faint marks can appear around edges.

When should I use PNG instead?

For screenshots, diagrams, pixel art and anything with text. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, and for flat graphics it is often no larger than a JPG.

What happens to transparency in a 32-bit BMP?

It is filled with white, because JPG cannot store transparent pixels. To keep it, convert to PNG.

Can I convert many BMP files at once?

Yes. Add them all together. Each is converted in turn and Download All puts them in one ZIP.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion is done by your browser and the files stay on your device.
