This DDS to JPG converter turns game texture files into JPG images you can look at, post or attach to a message. DDS is a format made for graphics cards, and ordinary photo viewers and browsers cannot display it. A JPG is the quickest way to see what a texture contains or to show it to someone else. If the texture has transparency or is going back into a game, use the DDS to PNG Converter instead.
Which DDS Files It Reads
| DDS type | Also called | Supported |
|---|---|---|
| DXT1 | BC1 | Yes |
| DXT3 | BC2 | Yes |
| DXT5 | BC3 | Yes |
| Uncompressed RGB and RGBA | Yes | |
| BC4, BC5 | ATI1, ATI2 | No |
| BC6H, BC7 | DX10 and later | No |
Older games and most mods use the DXT types. A file that fails is usually BC7, the format newer engines prefer for colour textures.
What Changes When DDS Becomes JPG
- Transparency is removed. The alpha channel is dropped and transparent areas become white.
- Mipmaps are dropped. Only the full-size image is kept.
- The image is compressed a second time. DXT compression has already lost some detail, and JPG loses a little more. For a preview that does not matter.
- The file opens anywhere. Each result shows its original and new size.
Common Uses
People convert DDS to JPG to browse the textures in a game or mod folder, to post a skin or a map texture on a forum, or to check which file is which before editing. For editing itself, JPG is the wrong format, because the alpha channel is gone and every save loses more. Targa textures have their own tool, the TGA to JPG Converter.
How to Convert DDS to JPG
- Add your files: drag the DDS files into the box above or click to choose them.
- Wait for the preview: each texture is converted as soon as it is added. A file that cannot be read is marked with an error.
- Download: save a single JPG, or use Download All to get every converted file in one ZIP.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open a DDS file as a JPG?
Drop the DDS file into the converter above. It decodes the texture in your browser and gives you a JPG you can open in any viewer. Add several files to convert them together and download a ZIP.
Why will my DDS file not convert?
Most likely it uses a newer compression type. The converter reads DXT1, DXT3 and DXT5 textures and uncompressed DDS files. It cannot read BC7, BC6H, BC4 or BC5, which many recent games use. For those, use a desktop tool such as Microsoft's texconv, or GIMP or Paint.NET with a DDS plug-in.
Will I lose transparency?
Yes. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas of the texture are filled with white. If you need the transparency, convert to PNG.
Why does my texture look blue or purple?
It is probably a normal map. Normal maps store surface direction in the colour channels and look mostly blue or purple by design. They convert correctly, but they are data and not pictures, so a JPG of one is only useful as a preview.
What happens to the mipmaps?
Only the largest image in the file is converted. A JPG cannot hold the chain of smaller copies that a DDS stores for use at a distance.
Can I convert the JPG back to DDS?
Not here, and it is not a good idea. A texture that has been through JPG compression has lost detail and its alpha channel. Keep the original DDS, or work from a PNG, if the texture is going back into a game.
