This TGA to JPG converter turns Targa files into JPG images that open anywhere and are small enough to email or post. It suits renders, screenshots and texture previews that you want to show someone. JPG cannot hold transparency, so use it for sharing, and keep the TGA or a PNG as your working copy.
What Changes When TGA Becomes JPG
| TGA | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | None, or lossless RLE | Lossy |
| Transparency | Yes, in 32-bit files | No. Transparent areas become white |
| File size | Large | Much smaller |
| Opens in | Image editors and game tools | Everything |
Each result shows the original size and the new size, so you can see the saving for your own files.
When JPG Is the Wrong Choice
JPG compression works on blocks of 8 × 8 pixels and is tuned for the gradual tones of photographs. Game textures are often the opposite: hard edges, flat colour and fine lines. Those can pick up faint blocks and halos. Normal maps, masks and other data textures should never be saved as JPG, because the loss changes values the game engine reads as numbers. For anything that will go back into a game or an editor, use the TGA to PNG Converter, which is lossless and keeps the alpha channel.
Which TGA Files It Reads
The converter reads true-colour TGA at 15, 16, 24 and 32 bits, 8-bit greyscale and colour-mapped files, with or without RLE compression. It also reads the header flag that says whether the image is stored bottom-up or top-down, so the JPG is not flipped. If your textures are DirectX files, they need the DDS to JPG Converter.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a TGA file to JPG?
Drop the TGA file into the converter above. It is decoded in your browser and a JPG is ready to download a moment later. Add several files to convert them together and download a ZIP.
Will I lose quality converting TGA to JPG?
A little. TGA stores every pixel exactly and JPG compresses with some loss. On a photograph or a 3D render the difference is hard to see. On textures with sharp edges, flat colour or small text, faint blocks can appear around the edges. If you need a perfect copy, convert to PNG.
What happens to the transparent parts?
JPG has no transparency, so the alpha channel is removed and transparent areas become white. If the image must keep its transparent background, use the TGA to PNG converter.
Why is a TGA file so much bigger than the JPG?
A TGA holds its pixels uncompressed or with light run-length compression, so a 2048 × 2048 texture with alpha is about 16 MB. JPG is built to shrink photographic detail and often brings the same picture down to a few hundred kilobytes.
Is TGA to JPEG the same as TGA to JPG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are two spellings of the same format. The three-letter form comes from old versions of Windows, which limited file extensions to three characters.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The TGA is read and converted by your browser on your own device, and nothing is sent to a server.
