Related Name Generators
This god name generator names the gods and goddesses of an invented world, for a novel, a tabletop campaign or a game. Choose a domain, such as the sun, death, war or the sea, and it gives a name with a title to match: Orvath, Lord of the First Light, or Wynara the Unhurried. The names are invented. No god of a real religion is used.
Seven Domains
| Domain | What the god has charge of | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sun and sky | Daylight, summer, open weather | Taluin the Unclouded |
| Death and night | The dead, graves, the passage out of life | Dalmira, Mother of the Last Door |
| War | Battle, oaths between soldiers, victory | Davrim the Unyielding |
| Sea and storm | Tides, weather at sea, the drowned | Eshune, Warden of the Grey Tide |
| Harvest and life | Crops, seasons, the household | Ombrial, Lord of the Last Sheaf |
| Knowledge and magic | Writing, secrets, the stars | Yarim the Star-Reader |
| Trickery and luck | Chance, thieves, lost things | Isoreth, Mother of Lost Things |
Two Forms of Title
The generator gives a title in one of two forms. The first names what the god rules: Lord, Lady, Father, Mother, King, Queen, Keeper or Warden of something. The second is an epithet, a describing phrase that follows the name, such as the Storm-Caller or Who Waits. An epithet is what people say when they would rather not use the name itself, which is why gods of death and of trickery tend to have several.
Building a Pantheon from the Names
- Start with what people fear. A farming country needs a harvest god before it needs a god of knowledge. A coast needs the sea.
- Give two gods a quarrel. The sun god and the death god who were once married is a story. Seven gods who agree is a list.
- Let the title change by place. Inland the sea god is the Storm-Caller. In a port the same god is Keeper of the Safe Harbour.
- Decide who serves each god. A title such as the Pale Shepherd tells you what the priests wear and what they do at a funeral.
For gods in the manner of the Vikings, use the Norse God Name Generator. Servants of the gods are in the Angel Name Generator and the Paladin Name Generator, their enemies in the Demon Name Generator, and those who worship in secret in the Cult Name Generator.
How to Use the God Name Generator
- Choose name and title or name only: The title says what the god rules, as in Lord of the First Light.
- Choose a domain and god or goddess: The domain decides the title.
- Generate and copy: Each press gives six new names.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I name a god for a fantasy world?
Give the god a short name and a title that says what people ask of them. Worshippers use the title more than the name: sailors pray to the Tide-Turner, not to Aldemar. Choose a domain here and the generator supplies both.
What is a domain?
The part of life a god has charge of, such as war, the sea or the harvest. In Dungeons & Dragons a cleric also chooses a domain, which decides the cleric's spells, so a god's domain matters to players.
How many gods does a pantheon need?
As many as the story will use. Five to nine is enough for most campaigns: one for each thing the people of the world fear or depend on. More can be added when a player asks.
Are these the names of real gods?
No. The names are invented, and gods of real religions and of published game settings are left out. If you want the sound of one real tradition, the Norse generator linked below builds names from Old Norse words.
Can a god have more than one title?
Yes, and most do. Generate a few times with the same domain and give one god two or three titles. Different towns may know the same god under different ones.
Can I use the names in a published book or game?
Yes. There is no fee and no credit is needed.
