Norse God Names

This Norse god name generator makes names for invented gods and goddesses in the Norse manner. Each name is built from two Old Norse name elements, and the generator shows both parts and what they mean: Vigmund is Vig (battle) and mund (protector). Choose a domain and it adds a title, as in Alfdis, Lady of the Ice Fjords. The gods of the myths themselves are not generated.

How an Old Norse Name Is Built

Old Norse personal names were usually two elements joined. The first could be a word for war, a god, an animal or a thing of value. The second marked the name as a man's or a woman's. The pair did not have to make a sentence. Hrafndis is raven and lady, and nobody asked what a raven-lady was. That freedom is why two dozen elements gave the Norse hundreds of names.

The titles are invented. Old Norse poetry is full of two-word descriptions of this kind, called kennings, and the titles copy that habit, but none of them is a title the Norse gave to one of their own gods.

Where to Use the Names

A setting based on the Viking age needs local gods as well as the great ones: the god of one fjord, the goddess of one family. These names suit them. For the people who worship them, use the Viking Name Generator. Gods without a Norse sound are in the God Name Generator, and their halls and ships can be named with the Castle Name Generator and the Ship Name Generator.

How to Use the Norse God Name Generator

  1. Choose name and title or name only: The title is for the domain, as in Warden of the Ice Fjords.
  2. Choose a domain and god or goddess: The domain decides the title. The gender decides the second half of the name.
  3. Generate and copy: Each press gives six names with their meanings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these the real Norse gods?

No. Odin, Thor, Freyja and the other gods of the myths are not generated. These are new names built the way Old Norse names were built, for an invented god, a character or a setting based on the Viking age.

How were Old Norse names made?

Most were two elements joined, each a word with a meaning: Sig (victory) and mund (protector) give Sigmund. The same stock of elements was used again and again in new pairs, which is what this generator does.

Do the meanings shown come from Old Norse?

Yes, the elements and their meanings are those given in standard name references. The spelling is simplified: accents are left off and the old ending -r is dropped, so Sigmundr is written Sigmund.

Why are some of the results real Viking names?

Because people and invented gods draw on the same elements. Sigmund, Gudrun and Asdis were all borne by real people. If you want a name nobody had, pick a rarer pair.

Are the titles from the myths?

No. Titles such as Lord of the Shield-Wall are invented for this generator, in the two-word style the old poets liked. They are not names the Norse used for their gods.

What is the difference between this and the Viking name generator?

The Viking generator gives names for people, with a father's name or a nickname. This one adds a domain and a divine title, and shows what each part of the name means.
