Add Text to Image

Write text on a photo: captions, titles and labels with your choice of font, colour, outline and shadow.

Runs in your browser. Your image is not uploaded.

This tool adds text to an image in your browser. Write a caption under a photo, a title across a thumbnail, a date or a label, or a quote over a background picture. Each text can have its own font, size, colour, outline, shadow and background box, and you place it by dragging it on the picture. The finished photo downloads at its original resolution as JPG, PNG or WebP.

How to Add Text to an Image

  1. Add your picture. A sample text appears near the bottom, ready to edit.
  2. Type your text. Press Enter in the Text box for a second line.
  3. Style it. Pick a font, size and colour, and add an outline, shadow or background box if the text is hard to read.
  4. Place it. Drag the text on the picture, or use Top, Middle and Bottom to centre it. Rotation tilts it to any angle.
  5. Download. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP and press Download image.

Making Text Easy to Read on a Photo

Text on a photo is hard to read when the picture behind it has both light and dark areas. Three settings fix that, and they work best in this order:

  • Outline: a dark edge around light letters, or the other way round, keeps the text readable on any background. This is the classic meme and video thumbnail style. About 6–10% thickness suits most fonts.
  • Shadow: a soft shadow lifts the text off the picture without the heavy look of an outline. It suits titles on photos with a calm background.
  • Background box: a semi-transparent panel behind the text, like a subtitle. It is the most readable option for long captions and small text.

Size is set as a share of the picture's width, so the text looks the same on a small and a large photo. At 8% on a 1080-pixel-wide image, the font size is about 86 pixels. Below about 3% (around 32 pixels at that width), text becomes hard to read on a phone screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add text to a photo?

Add the photo, type your words in the Text box, and drag the text on the picture to where you want it. Change the font, size and colour on the right, then press Download image.

Can I add more than one text to a picture?

Yes. Press Add text for each new line or label. Click a text on the picture, or its name above the settings, to edit it. Duplicate copies the selected text with all its settings.

How do I make text readable on a busy photo?

Use a thick dark outline around light text, add a shadow, or turn on Background box to put a semi-transparent panel behind the words. Bold, wide fonts such as Anton or Montserrat Bold also stay readable when small.

Will the downloaded image be the same size as the original?

Yes. The text is drawn on the full-resolution picture, not the smaller preview, and the text keeps the same size relative to the image.

Can I add text to a PNG with a transparent background?

Yes. Save as PNG or WebP and the transparent areas stay transparent. Saving as JPG fills them with white.

Can I edit the text after downloading?

No. The text becomes part of the picture. Keep the page open while you work, or keep your original photo so you can start again.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser and the picture never leaves your device. The fonts are served from this site, so no request is sent to a font service.
