This tool blurs a whole picture online. Add a JPG, PNG or WebP file, move one slider to set how strong the blur is, and download the result. It is useful for making a soft background for text or a slide, for a blurred preview of a picture, and for hiding the general content of an image. The picture is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.

How to Blur an Image

  1. Add the picture. Drop it on the box or click to choose a file.
  2. Set the strength. Move the Blur Strength slider. The preview updates as you move it, and the line across the preview can be dragged to show the original on one side.
  3. Choose the format. The tool starts with the format you added. Change it to JPG, PNG or WebP if you need another.
  4. Download. The file is saved with -blurred added to its name.

What the Strength Setting Means

The strength is measured against the size of the picture, so the same setting gives the same look on a small image and a large one. At 100% the blur radius is one twentieth of the longer side: 50 pixels on a picture 1,000 pixels wide, and 200 pixels on one 4,000 pixels wide. Around 10% softens a picture while leaving it recognisable. Above 50% only areas of colour remain, which is what a background for text needs.

Blurring PNG Files and Transparency

A PNG or WebP with a transparent background keeps it when the output format is PNG or WebP. The blur spreads the edges of the subject into the transparent area, so a cut-out gets a soft outline. JPG cannot hold transparency, and choosing JPG fills those areas with white. For a picture with no transparency, the borders are blended with the picture's own colours so the result does not get a pale frame.

What This Tool Does Not Do

  • It does not blur one area. The whole picture is blurred. To remove a detail, use the Image Cropper and cut it out.
  • It does not blur only the background. That needs the subject to be separated from the background first, which is a job for a photo editor.
  • It is not a safe way to hide text. Account numbers, addresses and names should be covered with a solid block, not blurred.

How do I blur a photo online?

Can I blur a PNG and keep the transparent background?

Yes. Add the PNG and leave the output format on PNG. The transparent areas stay transparent, with soft edges where the blur spreads into them. If you choose JPG, they turn white.

Can I blur only a face or one part of the picture?

No. This tool blurs the whole picture. To hide one detail, crop the picture so the detail is removed, or cover it with a solid block in an image editor.

Is a blur safe for hiding private information?

Not for text or numbers. A light blur can leave them readable, and blurred text has been recovered in the past. Cover it with a solid colour or crop it out.

Does blurring change the size of the picture?

No. The width and height stay the same. A JPG or WebP usually gets smaller, because a blurred picture has less detail to store. A PNG can get larger.
