After straightening by a small angle, crop the picture to remove the corner triangles. The Image Cropper does that.
Rotating PNG, JPG and WebP
- PNG: lossless. A quarter turn gives a pixel-for-pixel copy, and transparency is kept.
- JPG: saved again with compression, so set the quality high if you plan to edit further. There is no transparency, and empty corners are white.
- WebP: keeps transparency and is compressed at the quality you choose.
Why Photos Turn Up Sideways
A camera sensor always records the picture the same way round. When a phone is held upright or upside down, it stores a note in the file's EXIF metadata saying how the picture should be turned for viewing. Most apps follow the note. Some older programs, upload forms and embedded viewers do not, and they show the photo as the sensor saw it. Rotating the image here and saving it fixes the pixels themselves, so nothing depends on that note. How do I rotate a PNG online?
Add the PNG to the rotator above, press a quick rotate button for 90 or 180 degrees or set a custom angle, and download the result. The file is saved as a PNG again unless you choose another format, and any transparency is kept.
Does rotating reduce image quality?
A turn of 90, 180 or 270 degrees only moves pixels to new positions, so a PNG comes out identical in quality. A JPG or WebP is compressed again when it is saved, which adds a small loss at the quality you choose. Rotating by any other angle resamples the picture and softens it slightly.
What happens to the corners at a custom angle?
The canvas grows to fit the tilted picture, which leaves four empty triangles in the corners. In PNG and WebP they are transparent. In JPG, which has no transparency, they are white.
Why is my phone photo sideways on other devices?
A phone does not turn the pixels when you hold it sideways. It records which way up the camera was in a metadata tag, and most software reads that tag and turns the picture for display. Software that ignores the tag shows the picture as stored. Rotating it here writes the pixels in the right position, so it displays correctly everywhere.
Can I rotate an image without losing transparency?
Yes, as long as the output is PNG or WebP. Transparent areas stay transparent, and at a custom angle the new corner areas are transparent as well. Choosing JPG fills them with white.
Is the image uploaded?
No. The picture is rotated by your browser on your own device and is not sent to a server.
