This favicon generator makes the small icon that appears in browser tabs, bookmarks, search results and phone home screens. Start from your logo (PNG, SVG, JPG or WebP) or type a letter or emoji, choose a background and shape, and download a ZIP with favicon.ico, an Apple touch icon, Android and web app icons, a manifest file and the HTML to add to your site.
Favicon Sizes and Files
| File | Size | Used by |
|---|---|---|
favicon.ico | 16, 32 and 48 px | Browser tabs and bookmarks, Windows, Google Search |
apple-touch-icon.png | 180 × 180 | iPhone and iPad home screen |
icon-192.png | 192 × 192 | Android home screen, installed web apps |
icon-512.png | 512 × 512 | App splash screens and large icons |
icon-maskable-512.png | 512 × 512 | Android adaptive icons |
Chrome needs at least a 192 and a 512 pixel icon in the web app manifest (web.dev). Google Search asks for a square favicon of at least 8 × 8 pixels and recommends larger than 48 × 48 (Google Search Central). The Apple touch icon gets a solid background, because iOS shows transparent areas as black.
How to Make a Favicon
- Add your logo, or switch to From text and type a letter or an emoji.
- Choose the background: transparent, or a colour as a square, rounded square or circle.
- Set the padding so the logo does not touch the edges. Check the 16 px preview: if it is a blur, simplify the design.
- Enter your website name for the web app manifest (optional).
- Download the ZIP, upload the files to your site's root folder and paste the HTML into the head of your pages.
Designing a Favicon That Works at 16 Pixels
- Use a symbol, not a full logo. A wordmark becomes unreadable at 16 pixels. The first letter of your name or a simple mark works far better.
- Use strong contrast. Tabs can be light or dark, so a coloured tile with a white letter is readable on both.
- Start from a square, high-resolution image. A 512 px PNG or an SVG gives clean results at every size. Remove extra space around a logo first with the Image Cropper.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size should a favicon be?
Browser tabs show favicons at 16 × 16 points, which is 32 pixels on most screens, so favicon.ico holds 16, 32 and 48 px versions. Apple devices use a 180 × 180 touch icon, and Android and installed web apps use 192 and 512 px PNGs. This generator makes all of them from one image.
What size does Google Search need?
Google requires a square favicon of at least 8 × 8 pixels and recommends one larger than 48 × 48. The 48 px image inside favicon.ico and the larger PNGs meet that. Google also needs the favicon to be crawlable and linked from your home page.
Can I convert a PNG to ICO with this?
Yes. Add the PNG and download: favicon.ico in the ZIP contains your image at 16, 32 and 48 pixels, saved as PNG data inside the ICO, which all current browsers and Windows read.
How do I add the favicon to my website?
Upload the files from the ZIP to the root folder of your site, so that yoursite.com/favicon.ico opens the icon, and paste the three lines of HTML into the head of your pages. On WordPress, use Appearance, Customise, Site Identity, Site Icon instead and upload the 512 px PNG.
Why is my new favicon not showing?
Browsers keep favicons in their cache for a long time. Open the favicon file directly, or try a private window. Google Search updates the favicon only when it recrawls your home page, which can take days or weeks.
What is a maskable icon?
Android crops app icons into circles, squircles or other shapes. A maskable icon has a full background and keeps the artwork inside the central 80%, so nothing important is cut off whatever shape the phone uses.
Is my logo uploaded?
No. Every icon is drawn in your browser and the ZIP is built on your device.
