Instagram crops any photo that is too tall or too wide for the feed. This no-crop tool fits the whole picture into an Instagram size instead and fills the space around it with a border: white, black, any colour, or a blurred copy of the photo. The result is exactly 1080 pixels wide, the width Instagram keeps at full resolution, so it uploads without Instagram cutting anything off.
How to Post a Full Photo on Instagram
- Choose the shape: portrait 4:5, portrait 3:4 or square.
- Add your photo. It is fitted inside the frame with a white border.
- Pick the border: a plain colour or the blurred background. Zoom out for a thicker border all round.
- Download the JPG.
- Upload it to Instagram and, on the crop screen, make sure the whole picture is selected (tap the expand icon if it is zoomed in).
Instagram Post Sizes
| Shape | Size | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | The most screen space in the feed; suits most phone photos |
| Portrait 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | Matches the profile grid, so the post is not cropped there either |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Classic look; works for both tall and wide photos |
| Landscape 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 | The widest allowed; takes little space in the feed |
Source: Instagram Help Center (supported shapes from 1.91:1 to 4:5, 1080 pixels wide) and Instagram's May 2025 announcement adding 3:4 photos. Since early 2025 the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles, so a 4:5 or square post loses a little at the sides in the grid, though not in the feed.
Photos That Need It Most
- Screenshots and 9:16 phone photos are taller than 4:5, so Instagram cuts off the top and bottom.
- Panoramas and wide landscapes are wider than 1.91:1, so the sides are cut off.
- Artwork, posters and quotes lose their edges or text when cropped.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Instagram crop my photos?
Feed posts must be between 1.91:1 (wide) and 4:5 or 3:4 (tall). A photo outside that range, such as a tall 9:16 phone screenshot or a wide panorama, is cut to fit. Adding borders turns it into a supported shape, so nothing is cut off.
Which size should I choose?
4:5 (1080 × 1350) takes up the most space in the feed and suits most phone photos. 3:4 (1080 × 1440) matches the shape of the profile grid, so the whole post shows in the grid too. Square (1080 × 1080) keeps the classic look and suits a mix of tall and wide photos.
White border or blurred background?
White or black borders look clean and are a deliberate style many photographers use. A blurred background fills the space with the photo's own colours, which looks more natural for travel and lifestyle photos.
Will Instagram lower the quality?
Instagram keeps photos 1080 pixels wide at full resolution when the shape is supported, and every size here is 1080 pixels wide. It still compresses the file, as it does for every post.
Can I post a panorama without cropping?
Yes, as one photo with borders above and below. To show it across several swipeable slides instead, split it into pieces with an image splitter.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The borders are added in your browser and the photo never leaves your device.
