Video thumbnail (HD) – 1280 × 720

16:9, kept under 2 MB so it can be uploaded from a phone

This YouTube thumbnail resizer makes any picture fit YouTube's thumbnail rules: 16:9, the right number of pixels and a file small enough to upload. Choose HD (1280 × 720, kept under 2 MB), 4K (3840 × 2160) or a 9:16 Shorts thumbnail, place the picture, and check the small previews: most people see your thumbnail at a few hundred pixels wide, with the video length covering the bottom-right corner.

How to Make a YouTube Thumbnail the Right Size

  1. Choose the size. HD 1280 × 720 is the safe choice for any upload. Pick 4K if you upload from a computer and want the sharpest result on large screens.
  2. Add your image. A screenshot, a frame from the video or a designed thumbnail.
  3. Fit it. Crop to fill for a 16:9 picture or a close-up. Fit, blurred background for a vertical photo.
  4. Check the small previews. If the subject is hard to make out at 168 pixels, zoom in.
  5. Download and upload in YouTube Studio under Details, Thumbnail.

Thumbnail Tips That Hold Up at Small Sizes

  • Keep the bottom-right corner clear. The video length is shown there, over your thumbnail. The badge in the preview shows where.
  • Use few, large words. Three or four words in a bold font are still readable in the up-next list. Add them with Add Text to Image after resizing, so the text is placed on the final frame.
  • One clear subject. A face or an object filling a third of the frame reads better than a wide scene.
  • Strong contrast. YouTube is shown on both light and dark backgrounds, so avoid thumbnails that are mostly white or mostly black at the edges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

16:9, at least 640 pixels wide. YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels; 1280 × 720 is the long-standing standard and still looks sharp everywhere. Shorts thumbnails are 9:16, with 2160 × 3840 recommended.

Why does YouTube say my thumbnail is too big?

The file is over the limit for the device you are uploading from: 2 MB from a phone, 50 MB from a computer. The HD size in this tool is always saved under 2 MB, lowering the JPG quality slightly if it has to.

Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail at all?

Custom thumbnails need a verified YouTube account. Verify it with a phone number in YouTube Studio; the option to upload appears once verification is done.

Should a thumbnail be JPG or PNG?

YouTube accepts JPG, GIF and PNG. JPG keeps photos well under the size limit. PNG keeps text and logos crisper, but a busy PNG can pass 2 MB, in which case this tool saves a JPG instead and says so.

How do I turn a vertical photo into a 16:9 thumbnail?

Choose Fit, blurred background. The whole photo sits in the middle and the sides are filled with a blurred copy, the same look YouTube itself uses for vertical videos.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The thumbnail is made in your browser and the image never leaves your device.
